Green Lantern Pokie Review

The Green Lantern movie debuted in 2011, and it was both a critical and commercial disappointment. Starring Ryan Reynolds, it told the story of test pilot Hal Jordan and his transformation into a ring-wielding superhero.

Playtech handled some of the cross-promotion, developing a Green Lantern pokie for various markets. Since the game is still available, and more GL projects are scheduled, I thought it was time for a review.

Return to Player

Also known as “RTP,” this percentage indicates the long-term average payback for a specific poker machine. For example, a pokie with a 93% RTP would return an average of $93 for every $100 wagered.

In the case of Green Lantern, this percentage works out to 95.34%. This is slightly below the average, but it’s still within acceptable limits.

It is important to note the role of short-term variance in determining the RTP. In order to achieve this average, you’ll need to play a thousand or more spins.

Betting Range

You can choose from several different wagers on this game, but there are two that are most important. The smallest wager costs $0.40 per spin, while the most expensive is $2,000. That’s a rather hefty range, making this game suitable for both high and low rollers.

Collapsing Reels

When you get a winning combination, all the symbols involved will disappear. Next, the remaining symbols collapse and fill in the vacant spots, with new symbols falling in from the top. This continues until no more new wins are generated.

Thanks to the dynamic design of this pokie, Green Lantern offers 243 ways to win. This number is superior to most online slots, as well as those found at brick-and-mortar casinos.

DC Super Heroes Jackpot

In addition to the prizes listed above, the game includes four progressive jackpots that can be won at any time. When the jackpot activates, you’ll be taken to a screen with 20 spaces. Each space conceals a coloured burst of energy, and these correspond to the prizes. These include:

  • Mini – Green burst. Two spots to win. Usually pays in hundreds.
  • Minor – Blue burst. Three spots to win. Usually pays in low thousands.
  • Major- Yellow burst. Four spots to win. Usually pays over $10,000.
  • Grand – Red burst. Five spots to win. Usually pays in the hundreds of thousands.

In order to claim your prize, you’ll need to click on one of the 20 spaces. This will reveal a coloured burst that corresponds to a specific prize, and it will fill one of the symbol’s empty dots.

This process continues until all the dots associated with a specific prize are filled. At this point, the player receives their winnings.

Triggering the Bonus Missions

To the right of the reels is a meter with three distinctive sections marked off. When you get a series of cascade wins, this meter begins to fill.

The more wins you string together, the more you can fill on the meter. If the level reaches the numbered sections, then you’ll activate the highest available mission.

First Zone: Training Centre

This is the easiest mission to activate on the meter. You’ll receive 10 free spins, and the reels are filled with all manner of special wild symbols. These include meteor wilds, missile wilds and grenade wilds. Once you’ve used up all the spins, the bonus round comes to an end.

Second Zone: Secret Sector

This mission awards 10 free spins, but all wins begin with a 2x multiplier. Each collapsing win in a sequence adds another 2x multiplier. This continues until all 10 free spins have been exhausted.

Third Zone: Fear Fight

Unlike the other two bonus rounds, the player doesn’t start with just 10 free spins. Instead, the number is left open-ended, so it could be higher or lower.

You’ll notice that stacked wilds tend to appear on the middle reel. This continues until you get eight stacked wilds on the middle reel, which brings the bonus round to an end.

Final Thoughts

Green Lantern is a solid online pokie. It’s been around for years at this point, but I still recommend it for fans of superheroes.

Playtech did an excellent job with the presentation, and Hal Jordan constantly floats next to the reels and performs an assortment of entertaining actions. Other members of the GL Corps also appear during gameplay.

The ability to reach a trio of missions is a nice touch, although the third level seems almost impossible. And let’s not forget about the progressive jackpots and the excitement they bring to every spin.
